The Lavender Museum or the Art of Real Lavender

In May 1991, Georges Lincelé, a specialist in fine PDO lavender, opened the first Lavender Museum in the heart of the Luberon in Coustellet, in order to preserve the Art of True Provence Lavender.

In a prestigious location with its large stone Provencal mansion and beautiful Mediterranean garden of lavender and olive trees, this Museum has a rich collection of 346 items from the world of lavender growing, distillation and perfumery.

All these fabulous objects are preserved, making for an experience full of discoveries, the key word of which is the protection and enhancement of the local heritage and know-how: lavender from Provence.

Lavender know-how in Provence

This botanical icon, which has been the pride and joy of Provence since the 19th century, is one of the rarest and most precious flowers in the world.

Today, the Lavender Museum has become a true institution committed to the preservation of lavender. It invites visitors to discover the privileged place of fine lavender in high perfumery and its major role in aromatherapy.

The museography, the passion of the guides and collaborators gathered around the Lincelé family, owner of the museum and producer and distiller since 1890 on the lavender-growing estate Le Château du Bois, make it possible to offer a visit appreciated by all lovers of this emblematic flower.

A flowery and fragrant discovery for all

Young and old, young and old will appreciate the multitude of activities to appreciate all the charms of fine lavender.

Children have a special place with educational tools to learn while having fun: quizzes, digital activities and animations to understand this beautiful subject in an intuitive way. Workshops, events, thematic and exclusive visits are organised throughout the year to fully immerse oneself in this universe of lavender.

Musée de la lavande - Cabrières d'Avignon

To this day, the Lavender Museum is still a 100% family-run business on a human scale in order to maintain a special relationship with its visitors. Environmental concerns and a commitment to the preservation of the real lavender of Provence remain the leitmotiv of this museum of enthusiasts.

More than a Museum with its specialised areas and producer's shop

- The courtyard of the Museum around the hundred-year-old olive tree is a haven of peace where it is possible to rest and picnic, to follow the traditional distillation around the Egrot still with the explanations of the distiller.

- The workshop, with its old-fashioned schoolroom spirit, is bathed in light in the form of a lavender field. It is a space dedicated to activities such as the sensory workshop and the making of lavender sachets (programme to be consulted on the website).

- The Museum shop, Le Château du Bois Provence® is a beautiful sensory invitation to appreciate the real fine lavender with a rich range of organic and vegan cosmetics, for the face and the body, designer perfumes and pure plant soaps, but also herbal tea, honey, dried lavender bouquets. Everything comes from the production of the lavender estate Le Château du Bois, owned by the Lincelé family. For 5 generations, they have been producers and distillers of fine lavender in Haute Provence and guarantee total traceability from the seed, to the flower, to the lavender field, right up to the essential oil, using sustainable farming methods. The brand Le Château du Bois Provence® honours fine lavender in each phytocosmetic product in order to rediscover the medicinal virtues of the real lavender of Provence, lavandula officinalis Chaix, the one and only flower to be protected by a PDO and the only variety of lavender to be cited in the European pharmacopoeia. The olfactory identity of the essential oil of fine lavender is the sign of a unique collection of niche perfumes, whose creator Elisabeth Proal sublimates the freshness and aromatic sweetness of lavender by associating it with beautiful natural materials. The boutique is elegantly decorated with a presentation of the product ranges to test the textures and active plant ingredients. The guidance and advice of the Château du Bois team is appreciated for the quality of the explanations and the care taken in the gift presentations. Depending on the season, they will also serve lavender tea, lavender iced-tea or lavender diabolo!
