The conservatory garden of tinctoriales plants - Couleur Garance is located on the terraces of the Château de Lauris. This garden entirely dedicated to tinctorial plants is unique in Europe.
Located on the terraces of the Château de Lauris (dating from the 18th century, listed in the Historic Monuments inventory), the garden is located above the Durance valley.
More than 250 species of tinctorial plants are grown from which dyes are extracted for dyeing, painting, cosmetics and food.
An educational and bucolic route guides you along 50 thematic squares, meeting useful, rare, Provencal and exotic plants. This garden also aims to raise awareness of respect for the environment, young and old. It preserves biodiversity and is cultivated in an ecological way.
The richness of the village of Lauris has long been ensured by the collection of mealybugs producing a powerful red, by the harvesting of buckthorn and fustet, plants endemic to the Luberon, and by the production of silkworms until the middle of the 19th century. The garance was cultivated in Provence until 1900 and used in many fields.
