The chasm

The source of the Sorgue at Fontaine de Vaucluse has an average total flow of 630 million m3 per year, it is the first in France. It is also one of the largest in the world, with its volume of water flowing.

The source of the Sorgue is the result of the emergence of a huge underground network. The water flowing from rainwater is on the one hand, and on the other, from the melting of the snow from the south of Mont Ventoux, the Monts de Vaucluse, the plateau d'Albion and the Montagne de Lure. This represents an “impluvium” of more than 1240 km2 and whose only exit is in Fontaine de Vaucluse. Fresh and peaceful
spring in summer, bubbling and impetuous in spring/autumn, La Fontaine, a true whim of nature, never ceases to intrigue curious and scholars since ancient times.
